Happy November, Everyone! This month, our Facebook Live video is on optimal sleep for you and possibly the person that sleeps next to you! Let’s review our notes, and then make sure to watch our video and begin applying these suggestions for peaceful rest. 

What is sleep and why do we need it? – One of the least understood areas of the human body

Sleep is a state, accentuating the growth and rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems. Sleep allows our bodies to shut down our conscious (thought) and voluntary muscles (used for movement). This allows our body to focus energy to cell growth and repair along with returning balance to our mental and physical state.

Our Top Natural Sleep Tips

- Make sleep a priority by keeping a consistent bedtime and wake schedule, including weekends.

- Develop a bedtime routine that is relaxing. We recommend reading a book because it allows your brain to relax. Other options include listening to soothing music, or soaking in a hot bath.

- Create a room that is dark, quiet, comfortable and cool for the best possible sleep.

- Evaluate your mattress and pillow to ensure proper comfort and support. If your mattress is five to seven years old, it may be time for a new one. In general, pillows should be replaced every year.

- Keep work materials, computers and televisions out of the bedroom.

- Exercise regularly, but complete workouts at least two hours before bedtime.

- If you sleep with a partner, your mattress should allow each of you enough space to move easily. A queen mattress is ideal for two people sharing a mattress.

- Avoid eating, drinking alcohol, partaking in nicotine, and caffeine close to bedtime. These can lead to poor sleep, keep you awake, or disrupt sleep later in the night.

Hello Everybody! 

This is Dr. Bob DeMaria. I am going to give you some Dr. Bob "Health Secrets." 

Are you ready? 

The first secret I want to give you is iodine. I learned this so many years ago. I know that people like to go swimming in swimming pools, they like to hang out in hot tubs, they like to take showers and brush their teeth with fluoride toothpaste. Well, you may also be consuming tap water from your municipal sink source of water. And those are not necessarily all bad, but the real challenge is that the water today has been treated with chlorine, bromine, and fluorine, and guess what it does? It competes with iodine. And I have found from my experience that the modern day scurvy is lack of iodine.

What's scurvy, Dr. Bob? 

Lack of vitamin C, and a lot of English and other sailors died of it. So if you or your loved ones are spending time in the pool or using municipal water, you could have an iodine deficiency resulting in a low thyroid, which will cause thinning hair, cold hands, cold feet, constipation, high cholesterol. If you are using a pool or any of those sources, you may consider getting a bottle of Iodizyme from us. All adults could take at least one tablet a day. And if you have children that are 100 lbs or less, I would do at least a half a tablet every day.

Now if you get any kind of reaction with the iodine, “What kind of reaction Dr. Bob?"

Skin rash, flu-like symptoms. It's not the iodine per se, the iodine is pushing the bromine, fluorine and chlorine out of your body. And over time it should go away. 

We're going to switch gears now to another little secret. The Bio-B Complex or Bio B-100's

Do you cry easy? Do you have sore muscles after exercise? And here's the big question, do mosquitoes like you? 

You say, “Well what do you mean do mosquitoes like you?” 

If I was to go out for a walk with myself, I never get bothered by mosquitoes because I have enough B vitamins in my body, especially B1 or thiamin. I know a lot of you watching me right now will say, “Dr. Bob, mosquitoes just love me.” 

Well, first, if mosquitoes love you, obviously you'll want to start taking some Bio-B Complex at least three a day. And you're also going to get yourself a bottle of the Kare Spray for the itch. But to help prevent that, I would encourage you to make sure you have enough B vitamins, especially if you're going to be outdoors for any length of time. 

Some of you could have what we commonly, what you have commonly told us, the summer cold. Well, the summer cold oftentimes is not a cold at all. It's an allergy. So we don't promote peanut butter, dairy, wheat products, probably pizza being the worst combination of all of them or a donut. They're not bad foods, but what those foods do is they create distress to your system like it's a foreign invader. So we encourage you to use some Histoplex-AB. It's kind of like a natural antihistamine. You could take two or three or four every day. But your ultimate goal, besides backing off those foods, dairy, peanut butter, sugar, and wheat, you're going to want to make sure that you're in the office to have your neck checked, your cervical spine, especially the upper cervical spine, because if that's out of alignment, you're going to have some nasal congestion. 

Probably the biggest thrill that I had in my life was many many years ago, almost 25 years ago, a young lady got off of our chiropractic adjusting table, she looked me straight in the eye and guess what she said? "That was faster than Benadryl!" That's amazing, isn't it? 

Here's another very interesting product and I had a conversation with someone today, it's called Li-Zyme Forte. Li-Zyme Forte is tremendous when you're under stress. Any of you out there, right now have a little bit of stress in your life, what Li-Zyme Forte does, when it hits your intestine, it becomes acetylcholine for your brain. If you're under severe mental stress, do you know you could literally take one of these an hour for about a two-week time period. It's a plant-based trace mineral. We see tremendous results with this. It's not addictive, but it's going to help calm you down. You don't need to take it forever. You can take two or three every day, but if your stress increases, you're going to want to add some Li-Zyme Forte. I'm going to close with this product. How many of you out there love sugar?

Cake, strawberry shortcake, cookies. You crave sugar and craving sugar is not necessarily the best because it compromises your immune system. Well Cr-Zyme, it's a trace mineral called chromium, and I've had people that have to take up to nine a day to stop the craving for sugar. But if you're having sugar cravings, Cr-Zyme, start with three or four every day. That will help stop the cravings. But to be logical, you don't want anybody bringing in that sweet pastries home because it's going to be an enticement to you. So we have a variety of summer tools that I know will help make a difference so you'll be able to enjoy your summertime.

Three Types of Sun Rays

The word “mental-health” has also become increasingly popular within the last few years, and we believe that with chiropractic and drugless care, anyone can improve their state of mental health.

- Chiropractic is rooted in helping the brain and nervous system, and current research shows that chiropractic care alone can increase brain function by 20-50%!

How does someone’s mental health impact their body and current state of health?

Humans are the only animals who regularly experience a stress response without an actual stressor present:

- Common conditions include depression, anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), drug addiction, worry, social anxiety, phobias, and panic attacks.

- Research has linked Alzheimer’s and dementia to high aluminum levels in the brain.

- Aluminum has been found in soil, water, air, processed foods, drugs, vaccines, deodorants, cosmetic products, and even different kinds of toothpaste. You may also find aluminum in plastic containers, foils, and cooking utensils.

What is sugar? It is a class of carbohydrates that turn into energy.

Why is sugar scary? Targets our belly, silent killer, addictive, and causes damage to a liver, low nutritious value, and it causes your body to attack itself.

The Drugless Doctors Points for sugar

Sugar Facts: 1 teaspoon of sugar = 4.2 grams, 1 tablespoon of ketchup = 4 grams (around 1 teaspoon) of sugar.

1.AHA recommends not eating more than 24 grams or 6 teaspoons of added sugar per day for women and 36 grams or 9 teaspoons per day for men. The average American consumes 30 teaspoons of sugar daily.

2. 2013 study found globally 180,000 die per year from sweetened beverage consumption.

3. 200 years ago Americans at 2 pounds of sugar per year, today, however, the average American consumes over 150 pounds of sugar in a year.

4. Sugar has not been extensively studied in chronic disease: has been linked to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, dementia, Cancer, and weight gain.

5. JAMA: Americans get, on average 350 calories from added sugar or 22 teaspoons. People that consume 21 percent of their daily calories from added sugar are twice as likely to die from heart disease.

6. Sugar and Cancer: Cancer needs to utilize sugar as a source of energy. In order to starve cancer cells, you have to kill the source of fuel. The WHO predicts Cancer will rise by 57% in the next two decades.

7. Not all sugar is created equal. 15.2 oz of Minute made 100% Apple juice contains 49 grams of sugar (same as eating 10 Oreos) – Sources of sugar you may have not considered: bread, yogurt, salad dressing, protein bars, pretzels, beef jerky, cereal, non-dairy milk, pasta sauce, fruit juice.

8. One 32 oz Gatorade has 36 grams of sugar, which is like eating 5 Reese's Peanut butter cups.

9. Sugar activates the reward center of your brain, just like drugs such as cocaine and amphetamines.

10. Sugar is toxic to your liver, just like drinking alcohol can be.

 ACTION STEPS:

1. Take an inventory- what are you consuming/day?

2. Read all ingredients and labels (especially the smaller print). Avoid anything that says sugar or the other chemicals listed above like dyes, artificial flavorings or colorings, cane sugar, coconut sugar, agave, honey…ect

3. Share this information with 1 person you love or care about

Important Factors to Consider

Water – Drinking the proper amount of water helps our body get rid of the toxins that the body is working on excreting.  A good benchmark is to consume half of our body weight in ounces of water every day

Eat Right – It is important to consume foods that allow our body to detoxify properly which means focusing on vegetables and proteins and decreasing fruits, sugar, and gluten.

Rest – Especially when going through a period of detoxification it is important for our bodies to get at the very minimum 8 hours of sleep at night so our body can process the toxins it is eliminating

Decrease exposure to environmental, industrial, and household chemicals.  These chemicals get stored in our body and have many harmful effects on the body and nervous system.

Exercise- movement is life.  Have a pattern of everyday exercise for yourself- this will promote elimination of toxins.

Simple Recipes 🥥 🥗🥦

Hi Everyone! 

We welcome you to our final Half-Hour to Health for the decade! We are going over new recipes for you to enjoy this season and into the next. Feel free to let us know what you have made when you stop into the office, or let us know on social media! 

1.  Zucchini and Sweet Potato Fritters

A. Ingredients – 1 grated zucchini, 1 sweet potatoes peeled and grated, 3 tbsp (gluten free flour – rice, coconut), ½ cup finely chopped onion, 3 large egg whites, 3 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp vinegar, 2 tbsp fresh chives, ¼ ground black pepper.

B. In a bowl toss zucchini, sweet potato and flour.  Add onion, 3 egg whites, and black pepper to the mix.  In a pan heat 1 ½ tbsp olive oil, drop ¼ cups of the mixture on the skillet and press down.  Wait until lightly browned and flip. Serve with chives for garnish.

2. Sugar Free Apple Walnut Cake

A. Ingredients -2 cups of no sugar applesauce, 8 packets sweet leaf stevia, ½ cup butter, 3 eggs, 3 cups gluten free flour, 1 ½ tsp celtic salt, ½ tsp baking soda, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg, 1 tbsp vanilla extract, 1 cup chopped walnuts, 3 cups chopped organic red apples.

B. Preheat oven to 350 F.  Use a 10 inch pan. Mix together thoroughly the applesauce, butter and stevia. Add the eggs individually and mix thoroughly with each addition. Set aside the flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients including the walnuts and apples. Mix well and add to the pan. Bake for up to 1 hour or until a toothpick is inserted into the center and it comes out clean.

3. Roasted Vegetables

A. Ingredients – 1 pound sweet potatoes cut into smaller pieces, ½ pound carrots cut in large dices, ½ pound turnups cut in large dices, ½ pound squash peeled seeded and cut in large dices, 1 large pepper cut in large dices, 1 large red onion peeled and cut in large dices, ¼ cup olive oil, celtic salt and ground pepper to taste, fresh flat leaf parsley.

B. Preheat oven to 450 F.  Combine vegetables in a large bowl and toss with olive oil. Season well with Celtic salt and pepper. Cook for 1 hour in a cast iron skillet and check every 10-15 minutes to stir or flip veggies. Top with fresh chopped parsley.

4. Chicken with 40 cloves of garlic

A. Ingredients – 4 pieces celery cut in 4 inch pieces, 2 cups chopped onion, 6 long pieces of parsley, 2 tsp Herbs de Provence seasoning, 1 – 3 pounds chicken thighs, 3 tbsp. olive oil, 40 cloves garlic or 3 heads.  Celtic sea salt and pepper to taste.

B.  Preheat oven to 375 F. Place celery, onion, and parsley in bottom of a cast iron Dutch oven. Season with celtic salt and pepper. Rub chicken with olive oil, sprinkle herbs with any remaining salt and pepper. Place chicken in Dutch oven and add cloves all around. Cook for 1 ½ hours or until the chicken is cooked through. Turn on broiler and broil for 3-4 minutes or chicken skin is browned.

5. No-Bake Pecan Snowballs (gluten free)

A. Ingredients – 1 cup pecan halves, ½ cup shredded unsweetened coconut, 1 cup soft pitted dates, 1 tbsp coconut oil, ½ tsp Celtic sea salt, ½ tsp vanilla extract, ½ cup arrowroot.

B. Place the pecans and coconut in the food processor with a sharp blade. Process until broken down and crumbled. Add in the rest of the ingredients and process again.  Scoop the dough by round tablespoons and roll into balls. Place them on a plate with parchment paper and place in the freezer for 1 – 2 hours. Add a little bit of shredded coconut on the outside when completed so that it looks like a snowball.

Thank you to those who came to join us at our office for our monthly H2H. As the sun sadly begins to shorten its stay with us, it’s important to know that one of its benefits, vitamin D, is actually important for optimal health. 

Vitamin D Facts

1. Vitamin D deficiency affects 41% of people in the USA!

2. It is a fat soluble vitamin – ADEK – other fat soluble vitamins absorb well together.

3. Hard to obtain the correct amount of vitamin D from food – fatty fish and eggs.

4. Necessary for correct bone health and a balance of calcium and phosphorus in the body.

5. Has anti-cancer properties by helping the body with a function called apoptosis

6. Helps to boost your immune system – effective against the flu.

7. One study reported 96% of people who had a heart attack had low vitamin D.

8. Several studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency is linked with decreased life span.

We are in the final third of 2019, (can you believe it?!), and we are kicking off the fall season on a mission to help keep your wallet healthy as well as your physical body.

3. Shop around – Trader Joe’s, Costco, Whole Foods, Earthfare, WSM, Mustard Seed, Heinen’s.

4. Remember to try new things

6. Plant a garden/or join a co-op

7. Budget friendly health foods – cabbage, onions, salad, chicken, ground/beef /lamb

8. Try not to throw away waste, figure out how to re-purpose.

Helping Those with Food Allergies & Sensitivities

Hi Everyone! 

Thank you for joining us this month for our H2H. It seems that everywhere you go these days, there’s an increase to food allergies in every age and socioeconomic demographic. We’re here to help guide you through the process. Please review our notes and watch the video below. Have a great month, and come visit us at any of our events in the community!  

Food Allergies & Sensitivities

What is a food allergy? 

- A body’s response to a food that creates an immune reaction. Most common foods- Fish, soy, peanuts, eggs (4 % of population- starts at infancy).

- What is a food sensitivity? A body’s response to foods that usually is delayed to hours or days.  Usually not as severe as an immediate food allergy but can be harmful long term. Most common foods- Soy, gluten, dairy, eggs, nuts/seeds (90 % population-develops at any age).

A.  Symptoms: Headaches, skin issues (acne and eczema), fatigue, joint pain, depression, brain fog, dark circles under eyes and redness.

- Why are we talking about this topic? Digestion?

What can I do to figure out if I have a food sensitivity or allergy?

What foods to avoid

A.  Gluten, Dairy, Sugar, GMO, Pesticides, food additives/dyes

Freedom From Stress

Hi Everyone! 

Thank you for joining us for our monthly Half-Hour to Health (H2H). We want you to enjoy freedom from stress, and as much as we are aware that life that throw us curve balls, there are steps that we can take to remove unnecessary stress from our life. Take the quiz below and watch our recap, too!

2. Do you feel overwhelmed?

3. Do you feel unable to cope with the workload that you used to be able to handle?

4. Do you often feel anxious, angry, irritable,  or tense?

5. Do you get headaches or stiffness/tension in your muscles, jaw, or back?

6. Do you feel unable to concentrate or remember things well?

7. Do you frequently experience an upset stomach, skin rashes, racing heartbeat, or sweaty palms?

11. Are you using alcohol or drugs to escape problems?

If you answered yes to more than one of these questions you may be exhibiting signs of stress overload.  When you are overloaded with stress your bodies nervous system cannot express your fullest potential. Stress decreases the bodies ability to heal as it was intended! 

What causes stress to the body & why are we talking about it?

Thoughts/Traumas/Toxins

1. Environment-pollution, weather, toxins from the genetically modified foods, chemicals in foods/products.

2. Social- finances, jobs, demands for your time and attention, loss of loved ones…

3. Physiological- aging, lack of exercise, poor nutrition, inadequate sleep…

4. Thoughts- your brain interprets changes in your environment/body and determines when to turn on the “EMERGENCY” response.  Your thoughts determine your reality! Change your thoughts change your world!

 Action Steps:

1. Use Celtic Sea Salt as a source of minerals- B,L,D  1/4tsp in 20 oz water.

2. Minimize and eliminate sugar that depletes body of minerals (journal)

3. Evaluate stressors in your life and develop a plan to manage them better
